Standard 3.1 Integrating and applying knowledge for instruction

Plan and implement instruction based on knowledge of students, learning theory, connections across the curriculum, curricular goals, and community.

I created an English Language Arts lesson plan that will meet this standard. This lesson integrates students' previous knowlede, is student centered, meets reading and writing standards, and includes the community in the learning process. Title of Lesson: Reading and Writing with News and Cards

Content To Be Taught: Using thank you, birthday, condolence, and get-well cards students will recognize that cards are written for different people and events containing personal experiences and opinions. Each student will be provided with a news article to read and respond to relating to the text with personal experiences and opinions. 

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of what an opinion is by providing an opinion about the article in the card they make.
  • Students will be able to interpret their understanding of the article by writing a condolence card, thank you letter, or get-well card that responds to the article.
  • Students will be able to explain a personal experience that relates to the article.

4. Is there a personal experience or memory mentioned in the card?

5. What is one personal opinion mentioned in this card?
