Modern and Contemporary Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is famous for its Modern and Contemporary Wing, which contains many of the most important and iconic art works of the 20th and 21st centuries.  In this website, first-year students in Villanova University's Augustine and Culture Seminar: Moderns (sections v01 and v02) are your guides to some of the most remarkable works in the museum's collection. In preparing this website the students were divided into teams of two or three, with each team assigned to a specific art work.  They then worked with Robert LeBlanc, First Year Experience and Humanities Librarian at Villanova's Falvey Library.  He introduced them to the extensive reference tools available at Falvey and acted as a consultant throughout the project. Using these resources the students wrote individual research papers on their assigned artists and art works.  After doing this background work, they travelled to the Philadelphia Art Museum to see the works in person and to explain them to their fellow students.  Finally, they merged their research papers into the brief writeups of each art work that you see in this website.  This is one of a number of web-based resources prepared by Villanova first year students.  The slide show below includes a few scenes from the day the students visited the museum.

The material on this website is also available in a printable version, which you may take with you when you visit the museum.
