Farm and Garden

This week, our young farmers and gardeners spent some quality time in our lovely schoolyard garden.  The Mustangs identified, collected and sorted various seeds lurking in dried pods and flowers throughout the garden.  They had so much fun documenting their finds! We worked to save these seeds for next year's planting before helping to put the garden to "rest" for the winter months.

The Mustangs were busy in the garden and in the kitchen this week!  The students voted to bake carrot cake and it turned out to be a delicious treat!  The mustangs measured every cup of flour and sugar, grated all of the carrots and mixed in all of the other important ingredients.  They even made a beautiful poster with pictures and their cake recipe.

The Harvest Party on Wednesday was a great celebration of our amazing garden!  We had a delicious feast of gnochii with pesto, garlic bread, cabbage salad, apple cider, and of course, carrot cake!

This week the students worked with Emily to decide what to make for the upcoming harvest party.  The students voted to make a delicious CARROT CAKE!  We love the carrots from our garden and have been snacking on them since school started!  We also helped Emily with a school-wide cooking project: gnocci for the harvest party!  The students cracked eggs and placed the yolks in the top of potato "volcanoes" to mix up their gnocci dough.  So much fun in the kitchen!  The Harvest Party is scheduled for Wednesday, October 9 (also Gradparents Day).  We can't wait to celebrate the garden with the rest of the school!

This was our first week of Farm & Garden!  We practiced working together and getting to know each other a bit better by starting with a "Hot Potato" name game!  Lots of fun!  We also spent time in the garden, exploring the crops we had available to harvest.  We ended class by harvesting fresh carrots and having a delicous snack.  Our job before next week is to brainstorm a delicious recipe that features CARROTS.  We are so excited for the upcoming harvest party!
