Math Kids (Sm.)

Context:

During student teaching I am teaching Mathematics from the Everyday Math

series.  The lessons are semi-scripted.  This is the program Cabarrus County

requires our elementary school to teach.  I am able to expand these lessons

some, but I mostly use the program outlined by the county.

Impact:

Using the Everyday Mathematics program I am able to meet the NCSCOS

obejctives outlined for second grade in Mathematics.

Alignment:

I meet the following NC Standards for Elementary Teachers through the

teaching of Everyday Mathematics.

Standard 9:  Elementary teachers understand and use the processes of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connection, and representation as the foundation for the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Indicator 1: Elementary teachers develop instruction in problem solving that enable all students to:

  • Build new mathematical knowledge through problem solving;
  • Solve problems that arise in mathematics and in other contexts;
  • Apply and adapt a variety of appropriate strategies to solve problems;
  • Monitor and reflect on the process of mathematical problem solving.

I met this standard by teaching math lessons in Unit 6 of Everyday Math, where students had to solve multiplication arrays, word problems, and borrowing subtraction.  I taught students how to read arrays and ways to remember which numbers made up the number model.  We also learned multiple ways to solve borrowing subtraction. 

Indicator 3: Teachers develop instruction in communication that enable all students to:

  • Organize and consolidate their mathematical thinking through communication;
  • Communicate their mathematical thinking coherently and clearly to peers, teachers, and others;
  • Analyze and evaluate the mathematical thinking and strategies of others;
  • Use the language of mathematics to express mathematical ideas precisely.

I met this standard by allowing students to communicate their process skills used to solve mathematic problems.  The students work in groups, partners, and individually to help build their content knowledge and learn to communicate their work in mathematical terminology.
