This case study first introduces the reader to The British International School of New York.

Then, due to a field study of formal and informal interviews and observations held with the school’s administrators and teachers, a continuous challenge of professional practice with which the school is struggling is identified, and a plan of action to address that challenge is outlined.

Finally, a reflection on the lessons learned throughout this process by both the school’s administrators and myself is revealed.

Leadership Standards

The NY State Standards identify nine characteristics of effective leaders.  I believe that an effective school leader is one who is able to provide and support an environment where all - students and staff - are able to achieve their goals and be successful.

In order to accomplish this belief, the decisions and actions I make as a school leader must include the basic components of:

  • pursuing precise and shared objectives,
  • building the capacity of faculty and staff,
  • gathering and analyzing data,
  • communicating with stakeholders in the school community,
  • monitoring the effects of efforts currently in place and admitting when re-direction is needed,
  • respecting and encouraging multiculturalism

Success in accomplishing these objectives requires patience, professionalism, honesty, openness, and courage.

I strive to enhance these competencies and the ones proposed by the State of NY through lifelong learning and self-reflection.
