Course Objectives/Candidate Outcomes

1. Apprentices will enhance their leadership through appropriate and powerful use of technologies including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Email, and the World Wide Web.
2. Apprentices will understand and be able to apply the vision for technology leadership in schools presented in the Technology Standards for School Administrators (TSSA):

I. Leadership and Vision: Educational leaders inspire a shared vision for comprehensive integration of technology and foster an environment and culture conducive to the realization of that vision.

II. Learning and Teaching: Educational leaders ensure that curricular design, instructional strategies, and learning environments integrate appropriate technologies to maximize learning and teaching.

III. Productivity and Professional Practice: Educational leaders apply technology to enhance their professional practice and to increase their own productivity and that of others.

IV. Support, Management, and Operations: Educational leaders ensure the integration of technology to support productive systems for learning and administration.

V. Assessment and Evaluation: Educational leaders use technology to plan and implement comprehensive systems of effective assessment and evaluation.

VI. Social, Legal, and Ethical Issues: Educational leaders understand the social, legal, and ethical issues related to technology and model responsible decision-making related to these issues.

Class activities are tied to specific CPSEL and TSSA standards within the TaskStream course website. Note that the CPSELs are short on specific references to technology; however, the CPSEL creators state that "Inherent in [all of the] standards is a strong commitment to cultural diversity and the use of technology as a powerful tool." This course directly addresses ELDA Tier I proficiency A.2.a, "Ability to identify and leverage resources to support learning: Use of technology in professional practice."

Textbooks/Readings

No textbook is required for this course. You will receive a copy of ISTE’s Technology Standards for School Administrators (TSSA) which you should read after the first class session. The course website will also include links to resources and readings which will be accessed during class and may also be used outside of class time. Should you be interested in a book on this subject, one recommendation is The Principle as Technology Leader by Theodore Creighton.

Our course will be based in a web-based teaching and learning system called TaskStream. You are required to subscribe to TaskStream.  The cost for this subscription is $25/semester; $39/year; $65/2 years; $85/3 years or $99/4years. TaskStream offers a set of web-based tools for K-12 schools and teacher education programs.  It provides instructional design instruments such as Unit Builder, Lesson Builder, Standards Management and Rubric Wizard.  The Web Folio Builder provides a mechanism to create, organize and share electronic portfolios.  TaskStream facilitates submitting work for evaluation, receiving feedback from peers and instructors, and creating standards-based lessons and units.

Course Requirements/Activities

Class 1: Excel spreadsheet using data generated in class
Class 2: Word processed newsletter-style document
Class 3: Practice PowerPoint (not actually presented)
Class 4: PowerPoint presentation done individually or in groups of up to three members on a TSSA standard
Each activity also has a required associated reflection in which you consider how the skills you have learned and practiced may be applied.

Assessment Plan

This course is graded as Pass/Fail. A grade of ‘Pass’ will be awarded to students who complete all projects with at least satisfactory scores for all rubric elements. See the rubrics within TaskStream for more detailed information.

Feedback and scores are viewable through TaskStream. If a project fails to meet the minimum requirements for a score of 'satisfactory' in all rubric elements, the student(s) will be notified and allowed to resubmit a revised version of the project.

For this course, the points which TaskStream comes up with for your assignments have little meaning. If you feel like your "score" for an assignment is low, try to ignore it (I won't be looking at total scores for any reason) and just look at the way the individual rubric elements were evaluated. If you have any questions on the distinction between 'Satisfactory' and 'Strong' for a particular element, feel free to contact me for clarification.
