Teacher of Mathematics and Director of Programming,  The Bronx Lab School, 2006 – present


Develop and teach math courses in collaboration with colleagues.  Design and implement all teaching and student schedules for entire school, and coordinate all aspects of student transcript maintenance.   Serve as advisor to students.

 

  • Write curricula for and teach Integrated Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II/Trigonometry, and Structures math courses, integrating inquiry instructional methods with NY State and Common Core math standards.  Create periodic assessments to identify individual student skill deficiencies and modify instruction to address these needs.  Coordinate with department on four-year student skill progression.  Teach Integrated Algebra courses in intensive Saturday Regents Prep Academy.
  • Plan, develop, and create all teacher and student programs for school of 45 pedagogical staff and 480 students.  Design programs by analyzing multiple variables, including personnel, facilities, and student need.  Coordinate with principal on staffing and course offerings.  Evaluate departmental course offerings to ensure graduation requirements can be met by all students.  Ensure programming compliance with NY State and federal NCLB regulations for various groups of students, including English Language Learners and students with Special Education needs.  Train advisors, teachers, and counselors on graduation requirements.   Collect and maintain permanent grade records for all students, and evaluate transcripts of transfer students.
  • Serve as Advisor to 15 students, mentoring them through the four-year high school and college application process.  Mentored and taught week-long outdoor/camping program.
  • Led Grade 10 Team of seven faculty to coordinate and enhance student experience across the academic disciplines.  Evaluated student achievement and crafted interventions for at-risk students.   Coordinated off-site curricular learning experiences at Frost Valley science camp and at various venues in New York City. 


Founding Teacher and Programmer, Bronx Engineering and Technology Academy, 2004 – 2006


Visionary and co-writer of a proposal that resulted in the creation of school and secured $400,000 in Gates Foundation funding. Proposal writing team consisted of representatives of all school constituencies including administration, teachers, staff, students, community partners and parent.  Responsibilities included solidifying mission and vision for a pre-engineering high school,  developing college preparatory curricula, and designing systems for operations and institutional evaluation.



  • Planned and implemented school’s opening. Responsibilities included co-design of ninth grade mathematics curriculum; co-design of ninth grade and tenth grade technology curricula; development  and creation of teacher and student schedules; organization of  two weeks of professional development for staff members; and planning of student and parent orientations.  
  • Taught Math A and Technology courses, integrating NY State math, physics, technology, and ELA standards.
  • Recruited founding teachers and provided critical input on personnel policies.
  • Developed and coordinated Technology Olympics, and annual showcase competition of student technology projects held at Manhattan College.
  • Mentored 16 students thought the “7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” in Advisory.
  • Developed systems for grade collection, transcript maintenance, and student achievement evaluation.
  • Co-created and Co-Chair of School Leadership Team, which brought school constituency groups together to evaluate and refine school’s mission and vision.


Teacher of Mathematics, Alfred E. Smith CTE High School, 2001 – 2004


Taught math at all grade levels.  Served as member of planning team to reorganize school into small learning communities.


  • Taught Math A, Math B, Interactive Mathematics Program Year I and Year II, and Regents Prep courses.
  • Tutored students individually and in small groups in Saturday Tutoring Program.
  • Served as member of year-long task force to reevaluate school’s academic and career training programs that recommended and designed new structures for the school to create small learning communities.


U.S. Peace Corps, Burkina Faso, West Africa


Teacher of Mathematics and English as a Second Language,  College d’Ensignement de Koumbri, 1998-2000


Developed and taught math and English as Second Language curricula at a newly established rural junior high school.  Researched and secured funding for and oversaw the implementation of various school and community projects.  Spearheaded school and community HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns.


  • Taught mathematics (in French) to 180 students in grades 7-9 incorporating national mathematics standards.  Designed and taught English as a Second Language classes and created course materials integrating AIDS awareness, health, and hygiene topics.
  • Secured financing for and established school/community library.  Initiated community-based HIV/AIDS theater competition for K-12 students at local and regional levels.  Organized girls soccer team, the school’s first sports program.  Planned and implemented tree planting project to combat effects of desertification.  Created girls scholarship fund, coordinated with community leaders to establish selection criteria, and oversaw annual scholarship competitions.
