EDL 705: Technology, Planning, and Managing Resources
19 June 2013
Technology Plan
Project Description:
Bronx Lab will, over the course of four years, install Smartboards in every classroom, and train all teaching staff in their effective use. Ten teachers, about a quarter of the faculty, will become Smartboard certified, turn-key their training to the rest of the staff, and serve as models/coaches.
Goals and Objectives:
The school will purchase five Smartboards each year, 2013-2016. By the spring of 2016, every classroom will have a Smartboard.
In 2013, ten teachers will undergo Teq’s Smartboard training and become Smartboard certified. Starting in the fall of 2013, these ten teachers will turn-key their training, leading quarterly staff development sessions.
By the fall of 2015, all staff will be proficient in the use of Smartboards, as evidenced by at least five lessons that utilize Smartboard’s unique features.
A minimum of four teachers will identified as school-based “Smartboard coaches,” and be available one hour each week to assist other teachers in planning and implementing lessons that make full use of the Smartboard technology.
As a result of increasingly interactive lessons, student engagement will increase, and our course pass rate will increase by 5% over the 2012-13 pass rate of 79%.
Implementation Plan and Timeline:
Planning:
April-June 2013: Administration, in collaboration with the department chairs, will identify five teachers to pilot the use of Smartboards in their classrooms in the fall of 2013. Administration will identify the other teachers who share classrooms with these five teachers.
Hardware:
Spring 2013, Spring 2014, Spring 2015, Spring 2016: Purchase and install five Smartboards each year. By Spring 2016, all twenty classrooms will have a Smartboard.
Training:
June 2013: Contract with Teq to provide the ten hours of training to twelve Bronx Lab teachers (those who will be teaching in one of the five rooms that will have the Smartboard in the first year).
August 2013: At least ten of the twelve teachers who underwent the June training will complete the Smartboard certification by developing and presenting five Smartboard lessons to the Teq trainers.
September 2013: First of four, quarterly staff development sessions devoted to Smartboard training. The Smartboard certified teachers will lead the staff development. The staff development will be differentiated: the staff will be split into three groups—technology novices, technology comfortable, and technology eager.
Spring 2014: After final staff training, administration will identify the next five teachers who will be mostly likely to fully use the Smartboard. Smartboards will be installed in those classrooms for use beginning in September 2015.
Use:
September 2013: The Smartboard-certified teachers use the Smartboard on a daily basis. At least one lesson each week utilizes unique Smartboard features. The Lead Teacher (one of the certified teachers) will create and maintain a “Smartboard lesson library.” Each Smartboard certified teacher will share at least one Smartboard lesson each quarter to the school’s lesson library.
