I am Jill Kingsland, and I recently graduated from Villanova University's Secondary Education and English degree programs. I am from the West Chester area, and I have been wanting to pursue teaching as a career ever since approximately ninth grade. I have always had nothing but the best experiences in English classes, and my experiences led me to want to provide such experiences for others for a living.
I taught three honors sophomore English courses and one mixed-grade theatre arts class in my student teaching at Harriton High School of the Lower Merion School District. My interests in reading and communication and theatre gave me a good foundation for these two different types of classes. I think my student teaching placement was a great match because I feel that I had a lot to bring to an honors classroom as well as a theatre classroom in the way of both content knowledge and enthusiasm. By the same token, my students also had a great deal to bring to the classroom that I could learn from, which is awesome in a mutually beneficial way. My students challenged me as I hope I challenged them.
My professional goals include getting a teaching job in the tri-county area, particularly in the areas of Chester County and the neighboring school districts in Montgomery and Delaware Counties. I also intend to pursue a masters degree in English in the next few years.
With regard to teaching, I aim to develop a more professional approach in the classroom in that I hope to maintain an urgency so that I accomplish my objectives. It would be a cheat to me but also to my students if I did not get to teach everything I wanted to teach in every given period, in addition to my students not learning everything that they had a right to learn from any particular lesson. I also hope to maintain and increase my level of content knowledge and maintain my high level of enthusiasm about my subject area and my profession in the classroom and in my life.
This is a portfolio containing my reflections and evidence of my understanding and use of INTASC standards in my student teaching.
