Standard 2

Learning
The teacher understands how children learn and develop, and can provide learning opportunities that support their intellectual, social and personal development.

Reflection

In the attached research project, I discuss at length the manner in which I learned about student learning.  In short for this reflection, I will say that my research proved that students questioning did in fact impact student achievement to a certain degree.  Armed with this knowledge, I implemented a system of requiring an admit slips from students; these admit slips were to contain a question or comment about the short story the students had read for homework.  Since all students were required to ask questions, I got to answer those questions in class.  The students achieved higher on an assessment that I gave them than another class for which I did not require question admit slips.  I learned in my research how students learn, and I used that information to create an environment where students can learn better.

Evidence

I did an extensive research project on student questioning which addressed this INTASC standard. You may find it here.
