Areas For Future Research

Areas of future research regarding populations of women who have been afflicted with cancer could be a follow up monthly study in order to measure if there is any carry over effect in relation to the group activities provided. It would be interesting to explore if this group or similar groups increase social participation or join similar activities within the community that promote and establish the  comradery and support provided by Club Discovery. Several group members reported they learned new skills or facts that can increase their overall well being.  Measuring if the involvement in Club Discovery has provided a further interest for group members outside of the group may suggest that some carry over or continued participation in other life opportunities have been further pursued as a result of participating in the group for 5 weeks. In addition, the group sessions helped to  promote health and wellness through the use of physical rehabilitation, supportive  group setting, and education.

Several group members indicated that they would like to continue one aspect of what was learned in the five sessions. While some group members expressed an interest in using a home exercise program, others took an interest in looking further into investing in an iPad in order to use this type of technology to help encourage well being and health through the use of helpful applications. Finding ways to help improve quality of life for individuals who have been affected by cancer is an important area to be addressed. Studies have shown that this population often will experience symptoms of fatigue, loss of physical function or ability to perform physically taxing tasks, decreased coping skills due to lack of spousal support for women with husbands in particular, suggest that interventions or support groups can be best used to help improve overall well being and quality of life through these supports. This is especially true for individuals who are diagnosed early on have shown to greatly benefit from social support that enhance coping skills and provide a safe place space to interact with others who have similar circumstances.

In addition, future research suggests that the best way to combat cancer related fatigue is to exercise. This is in part due to helping to alleviate other symptoms often associated with cancer such as depression and pain. Club Discovery incorporated activities for this particular population at Club Discovery an provided movement and exercise throughout the sessions as a strategy to manage cancer related fatigue.

Future research for this population may also want to consider demographics and available resources throughout the United States. Some group members were unaware that such support groups are available in their community or may not know how to research where to access them. By providing this population with a wider base of knowledge, we can work to provide better supports.
