I am an Instructional Designer focusing on curriculum design and eLearning development. As a graduate of Purdue University Calumet's Masters in Instructional Design & Technology program, my specialization was curriculum design, with a focus on Instructional Technology. Through this program, I gained the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to complete instructional design tasks efficiently from start to finish; this includes conducting task and learner analyses to develop a thorough course design, selecting effective instructional methods, and evaluating the effectiveness of eLearning. In addition, I have made the decision to advance my education and will soon earn a Master’s of Arts degree in Communication.
What do instructional designers do? Instructional Designers (ID’s) develop courses and instructional programs by working closely with subject matter experts (SME’s) to translate their expertise into effective teaching presentations. You may find ID’s collaborating with faculty members in institutions of higher education; researchers in a non-profit organization; technical specialists in a sales enterprise; K-12 educators at schools; or with just about anyone who has valuable knowledge and experience to convey to a group of learners.
What do you do as an eLearning Consultant? With knowledge of a broad set of teaching methods for increasing engagement, I seek to add value to the interaction between students and their instructors in distance learning courses. I help instructors analyze their teaching and learning opportunities in the ever changing landscape of online learning. Together we build strategic plans and implement new information technology infrastructure and software tools. I offer best practices and updated design approaches from the evolving educational technology field.
What kinds of projects do you work on? I have worked not only with faculty in the Office of Instructional Technology, but also with Emergency Managers in Higher Education to establish web-based, and instructor led training. Using the Blackboard and Moodle Learning Management Systems (LMS’s), I guide administrative teams in delivering instruction that serves all campus stakeholders in many subject areas across widely differing educational contexts. In addition, I support the accessibility of course materials and web-based interactions for people with exceptional learning challenges.
