NC- North Carolina DPI Elementary Education Specialty Area Standards
Standard: Standard 3: Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in science.
Indicator: Indicator 1: Teachers have knowledge of basic life science concepts including:
Detail: Characteristics of living things
Detail: Diversity of organisms and their environments
Detail: Life cycles, mutations, and adaptations
Detail: Structure and function of plants, animals, and their parts
Detail: Growth and development of organisms
Detail: Relationship between humans, organisms, and the environment (ecology)
Indicator: Indicator 2: Teachers have knowledge of basic physical science concepts including:
Detail: Systems of measurements, analysis, and interpretation of data
Detail: Structure and properties of matter
Detail: Waves and optics (light, heat, and sound)
Detail: Sources, forms, conservation of energy
Indicator: Indicator 3: Teachers have knowledge of basic earth science concepts including:
Detail: Planetary astronomy (objects in the sky, changes in the earth and sky, and weather)
Detail: Properties of earth materials (rocks, minerals, fossils, water, air)
Detail: Interaction of earth and living systems including management of natural resources and pollution
Indicator: Indicator 4: Teachers have knowledge of controversial issues and how they impact learning, including evolution and genetics.

Context:

I created this standard three checklist to show that I have taken classes that have given me a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts of Science.

Impact:

This will impact my future students greatly because I will have the knowledge I need to teach them the major concepts of Science.
