ESL Endorsement 2015-2018

Since last state visit in 2015, faculty from College of Arts and Letters who teach courses for the ESL endorsement (referring to ESL faculty or faculty in the ESL endorsement) have collaborated with College of Education faculty to address the deficiency, making the subject matter meaningful to prospective ESL teachers. The following are the changes or revisions made since last visit:

  1. All Faculty in the ESL endorsement have collaborated to revise curriculum requirements for the purpose of providing ESL candidates with alternatives and choices to meet their teaching needs.
    1. EDUC 2204 Families, Community, and Culture; ENGL 2281 Introduction to Language Studies; ENGL 4480 Varieties of American English; ENGL 4481 Studies in Grammar were added to the curriculum requirements. This change was approved for the 2018-2019 catalog.  Since approval, these courses, except EDUC 2204, have not been offered.
  1. All Faculty in the ESL endorsement have collaborated to revise curriculum requirements to  learning objectives and outcomes to align with the newly-approved ESL standards. Courses and syllabi have been revised and updated to these efforts. All ESL faculty have completed the following:
    1. Identify foundation and enhancement standards addressed in each course
    2. Review and/or edit the course-standard alignment
    3. Add assessments/assignments as evidence as artifacts and evidence of candidate progress and achievement as proficient ESL teachers.
    4. Create and complete ESL candidate portfolio guide
  2. Since Spring 2017, all ESL candidates are required to do student teaching in an ESL setting, which will allow them to demonstrate their knowledge, abilities, and competencies as proficient ESL teachers.

Performance Evidence

The teacher education program must ensure candidates are prepared to meet the Idaho Standards for Initial Certification of Professional School Personnel. Included in these standards are the Idaho Core Teaching Standards which all teachers must meet and specific foundation or enhancement standards specific to the discipline area the candidate is seeking endorsement.

Portfolio Guide

To show evidence of these standards, candidates will upload scored work into their Taskstream portfolio. To facilitate this, cach faculty member is requested to remind teacher education candidates in their course to retain evaluated work and upload it into Taskstream. The following one-page document can be distributed to teacher education candidates as needed.

Program Standards Alignment

Faculty members from both the English and Teaching and Educational Studies departments worked to identify evidence from the endorsement program to support the standards.
