| Placement Test for New Students In the first week of class, based on faculty evaluation, students often need to be switched to a different class based on their level of language skills. This can be disruptive and occasionally the appropriate placement of the student is not adequately assessed until after the drop-add period, thereby resulting in the student remaining in a class beneath or above his/her level or withdrawing from the course without the ability to add a different course. |  | Measure: Placement test for New Students: WebCAPE Course level; Direct - Exam | |  | | | | Proposed actions to achieve goal: MLL faculty has worked closely with Dean Brower to assess and refine the current system of placement and consider the use of a professional placement exam such as the Computerized Adaptive Placement Exams (CAPE).The digital version, WebCAPE Placement Test (SPT) is a multiple-choice computerized exam that tests a student’s knowledge of Spanish, French or any language at different levels of difficulty. The exam discerns a student’s solid knowledge from partial knowledge, which allows the assignment of a score that will predict accurately a student’s ability to succeed at a particular level of Spanish course. The exam measures knowledge, rather than experience, so students should not be bumped up or down a level based on the number of years of high school languages courses taken. If this is approved by Dean and Provost, Data will be gathered regarding the number of students whose initial placements needed to be adjusted. Additional data on student success rates in the courses will be gathered. The Department will also plan cultural events for students, faculty, and alumni, including lectures in both English as well as the languages taught at Manhattan College that deal with current issues as well as literature, music, and the arts. If given the necessary budget, The Department will expand in some languages to 3 hours weekly the conversation tables. Expected Results: Details/Description: • Attendance data at cultural events will be collected with the goals of 80% of students fulfilling the three event requirement.
• The Department sets a goal of providing 6 field experiences related to courses.

| Creating a new minor in Chinese Currently there are 21 students from 5 schools and Lehman College (through our MC-Lehman Consortium in Languages) studying Mandarin Chinese. | Increase enrollment and interest for foreign languages courses Enrollment in foreign language courses is down for the first time since about 2015 and enrollments in major European languages -- including Spanish -- are way down, including enrollment in the majors and minors in Spanish, French , and Italian. 2- Re-enforce an Italian minor hiring a visiting professor. The only full time Italian professor has opted for an early retirement plan. The department needs a new professor that can take responsibility to create a strong program for this language. The department proposes to hire the professor Luissana Sardu (Attached documentation)
3- Create "Bridge" courses in French and Spanish to attract students to continue taking language courses and start a minor after their requirements.
4- Look for financial aid for students who go study abroad and continue their language studies in the department.
5- Create new study abroad programs in France and in Latin America that include language classes.Expected Results: Increase number of minors and majors. Details/Description: - Collect data of students who continue with their minors in Italian, French and Spanish and compare them with data from previous years.
