Competency Menu

The North Dakota Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (NDACTE) has recently voted in favor of piloting an alternative method of assessing basic competencies in reading, writing, and math. The following menu options have been approved by the Division of Education and Teacher Education committees at Mayville State University. 

Reading (must meet in at least 1 area) 

  • A or B in one of the following courses
    • EDUC 318 Reading in the Elementary School 
    • EDUC 426/526 Reading in the Content Area
    • ENGL 317 Children's Literature and Media
    • ENGL 353 Survey of American Literature 
  • ACT Reading Score of 21 or higher 
  • SAT Reading Score of 543 or higher
  • Praxis CORE Reading (5713) score of 156 or higher 

 Writing (must meet in at least 1 area)

  • A or B in one of the following courses
    • ENGL 110 College Composition I 
    • ENGL 120 College Composition II
    • ENGL 125 Business and Technical Writing 
  • ACT ELA Score of 21 or higher (minimum writing score of 4)
  • SAT Writing Score of 5 or higher
  • Praxis CORE Writing (5723) score of 160 or higher 

Math (must meet in at least 1 area)

  • A or B in one of the following courses
    • MATH 103 College Algebra 
    • MATH 104 Finite Math
    • MATH 277 Math for Elementary Teachers 
    • An approved upper level math course.  
  • ACT Math Score of 21 or higher 
  • SAT Math Score of 532 or higher
  • Praxis CORE Math (5733) score of 150 or higher 

Licensure Statement: The above menu serves as an option for admission to the program at Mayville State University and licensure in North Dakota. Licensure differs from state to state. If you intend to seek licensure in other states, the Praxis CORE exam may be required. We strongly encourage you to visit the requirements of licensure in the state you hope to eventually seek a license.
