Student Learning Outcomes

Goal 1: (Theory) Students will have knowledge of musical grammar.

1.A Students will read and write music in treble and bass clefs. Students will identify pitches in C clefs. 

1.B Students will identify and write the following (a) major and minor key signatures, (b) major and minor scales, (c) modes, (d) 12-tone rows, and (3) other systems as appropriate to the music studied. 

1.C Students will harmonize a melody and/or bass line according to specified harmonic conventions. 

1.D Students will analyze the harmonic content of music using chord symbols, figured bass notation, or other notation appropriate to the music. 

1.E a) Students will analyze small forms (e.g. phrase and period structures). b) Students will analyze medium forms (e.g. binary and rounded binary), and large forms (e.g. sonata, rondo, fugue). 

1.F Students will sing music at sight using solfege syllables. 

1.G Students will notate melodies, harmonies, and rhythms from dictation. 

Goal 2: (Music Literature and History) All students will have knowledge of the fundamentals of the musical lexicon of classical/art music of the European/American tradition. 

2.A Students will be able to identify the qualities of music that associate it with a particular style or period.

2.B Students will identify the major periods of music, the major composers within each period and each composer’s most important works. 

2.C Students will be able to discuss the social, political or other world influences that affect the characteristics of the music of the period being studied (e.g. Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th-21st centuries).

Goal 3: (Performance) Vocal and instrumental performance majors and music education majors will develop performance skills in an applied area appropriate to their concentration.

3.A Students will demonstrate technical proficiency on their primary instrument/voice through performance of repertoire at an advanced level. 

3.B Students will demonstrate musicianship and artistic interpretation of musical works through performance of advanced repertoire on their primary instrument/voice that reflects (a) an understanding of the historical context of each work, (b) a broader understanding of the composer’s musical language, and (c) the student’s musical voice. 

Goal 4: (Composition) Composition majors will develop skills in crafting music that communicate their knowledge of musical materials and which is at a level appropriate for public performance. 

4.A Students will craft musical compositions for a variety of instrumental/vocal combinations for the concert stage that demonstrate the proper usage of notation, the ability to bring a musical concept to fruition (i.e. craft), and the understanding of past composers’ solutions to creative problems. 

4.B Students will craft musical compositions for film, video games, and other broadcast media that demonstrate the ability to bring a musical concept to fruition (i.e. craft), the technical skills used to integrate music with other forms of media, and the understanding of past composers’ solutions to creative problems. 

4.C Students will arrange and orchestra music for a variety of ensembles (that demonstrates both musical knowledge and awareness of the range, tone color, and function of each instrument in the ensemble.) 

Goal 5: (Sound Engineering and Audio Production) Sound Engineering and Audio Production majors will develop skills in recording and sound production that communicate their knowledge of technical fundamentals and aesthetic understanding. 

5.A Students will identify and describe the qualities and appropriate use of recording equipment and apply this knowledge to record music and other audio material in a variety of contexts. 

5.B Students will use editing software and hardware in the production of their own and other’s musical work and other audio material. 

Goal 6: (Technology) All majors will acquire basic knowledge of notation and digital production software. 

6.A Students will use basic music publishing and recording software to produce their own and/or other’s music work and other audio material. 

Goal 7: (Music Business) Music Business majors will acquire knowledge and skills requisite for thier success in business-relared positions in the arts. 

7.A Students will identify and apply principles of for-profit business in the arts to analyze case studies and create their own non-profit business proposal. 

7.B Students will identify and apply principles of for-profit business in the arts to analyze case studies and create their own for-profit business proposal. 

7.C Students will identify, define, and apply knowledge of basic legal principles of Intellectual Property regarding the arts to case studies and their own creative output. 

Goal 8: (Music Education) Music Education majors will acquire basic knowledge and skills in communication, classroom management, and pedagogy. 

8.A Candidates explain critical concepts and principles of learner development to work effectively with diverse P-12 students and their families. 

8.B Candidates apply critical concepts and principles of learning differences to work effectively with diverse P-12 students and their families. 

8.C Candidates apply critical concepts and principles of creating safe and supportive learning environments to work effectively with diverse P-12 students and their families. 

8.D Candidates explain central concepts of their content area. 

8.F Candidates demonstrate plans for assessment to provide equitable and inclusive learning experiences for diverse P-12 students. 

8.G Candidates demonstrate plans for instruction to provide equitable and inclusive learning experiences for diverse P-12 students. 

8.H Candidates utilize a variety of instructional strategies to provide equitable and inclusive learning experiences for diverse P-12 students. 

8.I Candidates will model and apply national or state approved technology standards to engage and improve learning for all students. 

8.J Candidates engage in professional learning and act ethically to work effectively with diverse P-12 students and their families. 

8.K Candidates take responsibility for student learning and collaborate with others to work effectively with diverse P-12 students and their families.
