Student Learning Outcomes

Goal 1: Students will demonstrate basic reading proficiency in the target language.

1.A Students will comprehend simple texts written in the target language and about the target culture.

Goal 2: Students will demonstrate basic writing proficiency in the target language.

2.A Students will produce grammatically correct written work in the target language.

Goal 3: Students will demonstrate basic speaking proficiency in the target language.

3.A Students will respond appropriately and comprehensibly to simple utterances in the target language. (Listening Proficiency)

Goal 4: Students will demonstrate basic speaking proficiency in the target language.

4.A Students will respond appropriately and comprehensibly to simple utterances in the target language.

Goal 5: Students will demonstrate knowledge of cultural phenomena in countries where the language is spoken. 

5.A Students will respond correctly to cultural information prompts.

Goal 6: Students will demonstrate knowledge of literature, history, and contemporary culture of the target language-speaking worlds. 

6.A Students will demonstrate an accurate awareness of the target culture.

6.B Students will demonstrate an ability to analyze target culture in meaningful ways.

Goal 7: Students will demonstrate an ability to read, understand, and analyze texts written in the target language. 

7.A Students will demonstrate good comprehension of primary sources in target language.

7.B Students will demonstrate good comprehension of secondary sources in target language.

7.C Students will pose new ways to think of the material.

Goal 8: Students will write accurately, convincingly, and in a logical, organized fashion in the target language. 

8.A Students will craft a thesis that is identifiable, plausible, novel, sophisticated, insightful, and crystal-clear.

8.B Students will structure written essays in ways that are evident, understandable, and appropriate for thesis.

8.C Students will use transitions from point to point with paragraphs that support solid topic sentences.

8.D Students will produce written work in the target language containing few significant grammatical errors.

8.E Students will produce written work in the target language with a varied vocabulary indicative of a high level of linguistic sophistication.

Goal 9: Students will demonstrate ability to understand spoken target language.

9.A Students will respond appropriately to complex utterances in the target language. (Listening proficiency)

Goal 10: Students will demonstrate ability to communicate orally in the target language. 

10.A Students will respond appropriately to complex utterances in the target language. (Speaking proficiency)

10.B Students will respond comprehensibly to complex utterances in the target language.
