As modern educators, I believe we are charged with preparing learners of all ages for unknown possibilities in a rapidly changing environment; adaptability and agility in learning are essential to success as a global, digital citizen. The explosive changes we have seen in the past ten years—not only in the massive availability of quality information but in the ease and affordability of tools to access this content—have made obsolete the traditional, ‘sage on the stage’ style of teaching. There is no better time to reevaluate the task of learning in our classrooms and the theoretical and pedagogical practices that make meaningful learning possible. I believe that infusing technology with meaningful learning experiences allows us to deeply engage our learners, to focus on digital literacy, agility and problem-solving as essential skills embedded within the content, and to develop best practices in our profession.
Creating and supporting best teaching practices in the integration of technology will better prepare students to compete and thrive in our global society. In my nine years of teaching in a variety of learning environments the world over, I have found that great teaching practices remain central to profound learning. In my experience, meaningful learning happens when the teacher is flexible, collaborative, experimental, and reflective and the learning is relevant. Finding ways to enhance, enrich and extend these environments with digital tools is the first step, with the ultimate goal of transforming teaching with technology in a way that students have collaborative and engaging opportunities for meaning making and constructing their own world-view through individualized, question-driven learning that is adaptable and applicable to multiple situations. Simply using techology is not enough to truly modernize learning; we must pursue making digital integration seamless within the curriculum through our best practices.
