Alexander Kapp's Andragogy Theory

"We use the term “andragogy” to label the academic discipline that reflects and researches the education and learning of adults. By this we emphasize the differentiation between the field of practice (“adult education”) and the scholarly approach (“andragogy”). " (Alexander Kapp, 2000)

In Kapp's theory he acknowledges Knowles idea with informal adult education but he tries to find the differences among actually applying andragogy into adult education. An idea that Kapp shines a light on is "intentional learning". He identifies the want to "intend" on actually learning and perceiving information that is being fed to the subject. He describes how the want to learn branches out into two methods of learning "self-directed learning" and "outside-directed learning". These two terms of traits within a person's want to learn expands to the idea of andragogy. Andragogy expresses the ways adult education has the ability to be excercized by the actions of the subject and prior knowledge. Self-directing knowledge symbolizes the urge to seek out your own knowledge and learn from what you experienced. Outside-directed learning shows how the subject has been impenetrate by influences within their surroundings and that in return has educated them to know common knowledge involuntarily but at the same time you are still accepting that information and still processing it. These two ways of learning lead to the intent to accept education.

Another idea that Kapp identifies is non-intentional learning which branches off onto three ideas. The first idea is "planned -learning but not by main purpose; this idea expands to the subject and their reason for learning. As their education has been planned and they are learning, that result was not their main purpose or intended conclusion but just an agenda that is being followed. The second is "happening" which is defined in Andragogy as being a form of an accidental learning experience. The third is "woven into life-routines", this method of learning is expressed by the idea of aging. The process of obtaining information and learning through life experiences. 

These two ideas of intentional and unintentional learning defines Alexander Kapp's theory of Andragogy and adult education.
