Artifact 48 - example of performance criteria or rubric for project or unit

Competencies are entered in CanDo website.

Our curriculum is very rigorous, we use online, text book, AYES and hands on work to engage all students. Just using the online piece as an example, it has many checks and ballances to be sure the students understand the materials. First we review the materials on the smart board as the students follow along using their hand out activity which has missing word problems. The materials that we cover include a short video and knowledge checks all of which are in writing on the handout activity. The students then complete a missing word exercise online followed by a topic group test. Each section is broken down into topic groups and each topic group is broken down into even smaller sections. There are no videos longer than 3 or 4 minutes and the students seem to enjoy them. Once all of the topic groups are completed and the hands on tasks are being completed, we assign the diagnosis scenarios which are computer based repair problems. The students do these as a class at first to be sure there is a general understanding of how the systems work and then they do them on their own. It starts out with a customer complaint followed by a list of items to be checked on the vehicle, the student need to pick the best item to check first, if they pick the best item to check, they are told that they picked the best one and given the result of the check and a list of items to pick from for the next step in the diagnosis. If at any time they pick a check that does not make sense as the next step, they are told they did not pick the best next step and it is explained why it was not the best next step. Each time they pick the wrong step, they loose a point and the score is kept at the top of the page. This continues until the problem is diagnosed and repaired. At the end of a section, the students are able to take practice final exams as many times as they wish with no time limits. When assigned, they then take the actual final exam for that section which is 50 questions and a time limit of 50 minutes is allotted. Screen shots of all the above are attached. We also use a text book which has chapter worksheets, ase style questions and chapter questions. We also have a test generator provided by the publisher which we can use to select questions from a test bank and or add questions of our own design. There is also a lab task book which is good in that it combines many tasks and or competencies into a single project on a vehicle. ie: if you are replacing front brakes, you will be completing several competencies in order to complete the brake job such as wheel torque, bearing service, component measurement, component inspections, tool handling and recognition etc. We also use donated vehicles that are bugged with problems that the students need to find as well as actual cuatomer cars that come in for repairs that are relevant to the topic we are covering.

Artifact 49 - evidence of extra help offered before/after/during school

We are always at the school 1 1/2 hours before school, we have a break from 9:45 thru 11:10 and we routinely offer help during lunch and after school as well.
Many times, this is when a student can complete a repair on his or her vehicle that does not fit in to the topic that is being covered at that time. We will allow them to come in during those breaks or after school to complete assignments in the shop, online or on their own vehicles.

Artifact 50 - homework policy (program or school)

We do not assign homework, however, if a student falls behind on the class work, he / she may catch up from home because the work is all available online 24/7.

Students do come after school to work in the shop or to use the computers on curriculum.

The internships are during the summer and part-time during school for those whose schedule will allow it.
