Domain 3b: Using Questioning and Discussion Techniques
IMG_3645.JPG This was one of my favorite lessons as a teacher to date. This artifact falls under Domain 3b: Using Questioning and Discussion Techniques. As a member of the United States Army, Veteran's Day has a special place in my heart. I wanted to take a pause from our unit and recognize Veteran's Day, while connecting it to the content we were learning within our unit. For my lesson, I brought in Lieutenant Colonel John C. Donlin. LTC Donlin is a West Point graduate, has been in the active duty United States Army for over 17 years, and has been on 5 combat deployments. I wanted to afford the students the opportunity to have an open discussion with a veteran in order to provide insight to some questions that they may have for the men and women defending our nation. The discussion worked out flawlessly, as I served as the moderator with minimal intervention, as the students asked LTC Donlin questions. The students created questions on a Friday, and our discussion was on a Monday. I met with LTC Donlin beforehand, and he brought prizes to distribute to students who asked questions that met my learning objectives (see attached Lesson Plan.) For the classes that LTC Donlin could not attend, I had a recording of an abbreviated discussion with LTC Donlin using those students' questions.

  1. LTC Donlin PPT.pptx LTC Donlin PPT.pptx
This was the introductory brief biography of my close friend and commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel John Donlin. Topics include: his background, deployments, geographical features of his deployments, etc.
  2. Veterans Day Questions for Discussion.docx Veterans Day Questions for Discussion.docx
These were a few of the outstanding questions that my students had created and asked LTC Donlin. The students were extremely interested and ecstatic at the opportunity to connect on such a personal level with a combat veteran, while connecting the themes/geographical knowledge they've gained from my world history class.
