For my Honors World History class, I had originally planned to give a standard test including multiple choice, fill in the blank, and short answer questions as a summative assessment for this unit, but in order to align with Common Core standards and really emphasize the improvement of student writing skills, I chose to design and implement a new type of writing assessment, which I have provided examples of student work. Before doing this, I had modeled the type of work I was looking for by doing a mock classroom writing assessment as an example. For this, I created a writing assessment that would essentially “tell the story” of what goes on in world history class. This was done so that the students understood that in their writing assessments, I was essentially looking for students to “retell the story” of the given unit, through the use of key terms and ideas. I had also provided an outline or general structure in which I wanted students to follow. I wrote a 1 page essay and distributed a copy of it to each student. This clearly aligns with Domain 3a: Communicating Clearly and Accurately. I then had students write their version of the classroom writing assessment, and graded them to ensure every student had a general idea of what I was looking for.
