My Perspective of Technology

To me instructional technology are tools used by educators to enhance their students learning experience.  This includes the use of tools such as iPads, Smart Boards, computers, etc., and there are always new tools being incorporated into the classroom.  As a future educator, I need to become comfortable with all these tools so that I can use them in my classroom.  If I am able to keep my students interested in a lesson because they know that they will get to use their iPad to play an educational game, then I must incorporated that into my lessons.  I believe that the Perspective on Educational Technology that most relates to my personal view is Educational technology as computer systems.  This perspective involves incorporating computers into the classroom, and I believe that in this day and age you must be very computer savvy in order to achieve great success.  Digital technologies has been broken up into four major eras since the 1950s:  Pre-Microcomputer(1950-late 1970s),  Microcomputer(1977-early 1990s), Internet(1993-1995), and Mobile Technologies, Social Media, and Open Access(2001-current).  I believe the one that has made the greatest impact on me was the Mobile Technologies, Social Media, and Open Access Era.  I was born in 1994, so for a large part of my life I have been able to have social media accounts, I have had a smartphone most of my adult life.  So I see life through the perspective of many of the children growing up today who do not know a world without a smartphone.  Two PEU standards I believe this demonstrates include effective teaching and assessment strategies and technological literacy in the content areas.  Being able to incorporate technology into your lesson is paramount to leading students to success.  If you are able to keep the students entertained while at the same time learning, then you are doing your job.  While I spent time observing in a kindergarten classroom through Del Tech, it was evident how important the use of technology was in that classroom.  Most of the students work was completed on their iPads and a lot of the teacher’s instruction was done with on a Smart Board.  That is very different from when I was in kindergarten, and I need to be able to keep up with technology in order to provide my future students with the best possible experience in the classroom.
