According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a practicum is a course of study designed especially for the preparation of teachers and clinicians that involves the supervised practical application of previously studied theory. The OFCE oversees multiple practicum experiences:
EDCI 401: Directed Observation
EDCI 420: Practica in Education (Library Science initial certification-undergraduate)
EDCI 420R: Practicum in Reading
EDCI 420M: Elementary Math Practicum
EDCI 420S/SS: Elementary Science/Social Studies Practicum
Completed by secondary education candidates the term prior to student teaching. The teacher candidates complete 50 hours of observation using the journal/guided observation form for each class observed. They also teach 5 lessons as part of the experience. It is evaluated using the Evaluation of classroom Instruction (LCET) instrument.
EDCI 420M - Elementary Math Practica
The teacher candidates complete 50 hours of field experiences over the 10 week term in a PK-5 classroom . A minimum of 20 lessons are taught. It is evaluated using the Evaluation of classroom Instruction (LCET) instrument.
EDCI 420R - Elementary Reading Practica
The teacher candidates complete 80 hours of field experiences over the 10 week term in a PK-5 classroom . Two 5-week placements are developed in diverse school settings and grade levels. Candidates are always placed with one or more partners in the room for team teaching and collaborative planning opportunities. A minimum of 20 lessons are taught. It is evaluated using the Evaluation of classroom Instruction (LCET) instrument.
EDCI 420R - Elementary Science/Social Studies Practica
The teacher candidates complete 50 hours of field experiences over the 10 week term in a PK-5 classroom . When available, candidates are placed in pairs for team teaching and collaborative planning of the units. A minimum of 20 lessons are taught including at least one science unit plan and one social studies unit plan. It is evaluated using the Evaluation of classroom Instruction (LCET) instrument.
