Description

Candidates complete Clinical Experiences (minimum of 80 hours) in a PK-5 classroom for 10 weeks over the length of the entire quarter. Two 5-week placements are developed in diverse school settings and grade levels. Candidates are always placed with one or more partners in the room for team teaching and collaborative planning opportunities. Candidates are required to instruct a minumum of 20 lessons.

Measurable Objectives

The teacher candidate will develop foundation skills for teaching literacy for the emergent learner. Primary attention will be given to developing teacher candidate skills in:

(a) planning and implementing developmentally appropriate literacy activities focusing on reading/language arts;
(b) planning and implementing lessons incorporating varied types of instruction (i.e. explicit, direct, systematic; construction of meaning, problem solving, and open-ended; spontaneous, authentic), materials (i.e. hands-on, pencil and paper, literature, textbooks), and structural settings (i.e. whole group, small group, one-on-one instruction, teacher-directed, center settings, social settings with adults and peers);
(c) demonstrating classroom management practices for culturally diverse students, mild/moderate exceptional students, students with either physical or educational disabilities, and gifted and talented students; and 
(d) administering formal and informal assessment techniques used to determine student’s strengths and weaknesses in reading. (e) develop proficiency in using technology to teach reading and language arts.

Assessment

Teacher candidates will:
(1)Teach and assist with over 20 literacy lessons;
(2)develop and implement unit and lesson plans appropriate for the reading language arts with technology and subject integration;
(3) utilize software and hardware appropriate for use with culturally diverse students, mild/moderate exceptional students, students with either physical or educational disabilities, and gifted and talented students; and 
(3) develop a field experiences journal that contains lesson plans designed and implemented by the teacher candidate, reflections about the teaching experiences, and representative artifacts.
