2022 METRO STATE SCHOOL OF URBAN EDUCATION UNIT REPORT TO PELSB

(1) Minimum of 100 Field Experience Hours

Standard 12: For candidates seeking more than one professional license, the unit must:

(1) provide a minimum of 100 field experience hours prior to student teaching that include:

(a) at least 30 field experience hours that are aligned to the scope and content of each license and endorsement sought;

(b) experience with students who differ in race, ethnicity, home language, and socioeconomic status; and

(c) experience with students with a range of exceptionalities, including students on an individualized education plan;

While it is theoretically possible for a student seeking grades 5-12 licensure in mathematics to also seek grades 5-12 licensure in science or for a secondary education candidate in social studies to also seek to earn communication arts and literature licensure (or some other combination of licensures), this doesn’t happen in the UED. Given the overlap in curriculum between Urban Early Childhood Education and Urban Elementary Education degree and licensure programs, it is more likely that someone would seek both licenses at the same time, but this also does not happen in the UED. What does occur in some cases is candidates who seek Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary or Special Education license wanting to add the K-12 ESL additional licensure program the UED that has also been PELSB-approved.

In these actual situations, all candidates complete the same 120 hour minimum field experience requirements with a variety of student demographics-at least 50 percent children who qualify for free/reduced lunch, and at least 40 percent students of color-plus a minimum of 40 additional hours in the additional (i.e. ESL) licensure field for a total of at least 160 hours before student teaching. Such requirements for both the actual scenarios and theoretical scenarios are stated in Section VI. of the UTP Student Handbook.
