Overview of CBEST

The CBEST exam is required for all individuals applying for a first time California teaching credential enrolled at University of Phoenix.

A University of Phoenix teacher candidates must  take and and recieve a passing score on the CBEST exam before completing 12 credits in the program as part of the level 2 candidacy requirements.

It is recommend students take the CBEST exam by the end of SEC/508CA or MTE/518CA (if  following the recommended course sequence). This would allow time to re-take any portions of the exam not passed initially. The test scores on the CBEST do not expire.

The CBEST consists of 3 sections

  • reading - 50 multiple choice questions
  • mathematics - 50 multiple choice questions
  • writing - 2 essays

An individual may take 1, 2, or all 3 sections of the test in a single session.

There are two options for the exam, a computer based test and the paper based test.
