CBEST - California Basic Educational Skills Test

The CBEST is designed to test basic reading, mathematics, and writing skills found to be important for the job of an educator; the test is not designed to measure the ability to teach those skills. ALL Californa Program teacher preparation candidates are required to take this exam.

CSET - California Subject Examinations for Teachers

These tests are for prospective teachers who are required to meet specific requirements for certification by taking examinations. There are multiple CSET exams.  Depending on your program you will be required to take one or more of these exams to fulfill eligibility and credential requriements. The most commonly required CSETs for University of Phoenix are:

  • Basic Skills
  • Subject Matter Competance

***Check with your University Support Team for information regarding which tests are required for your program. The state requirements may change at anytime so for the most current information, remain in regular contact with the Unviersity.

CalTPA - California Teacher Performance Assessment

The TPA assures that teacher candidates have the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of a beginning teacher in California public schools. The TPA is based on the California Standards for the Teaching Profession, outlined in the Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs).
 
The CalTPA is a series of four performance tasks. The tasks are embedded within the teacher preparation program.  A student must earn a score of 3 or above on each TPA Task.  Passing scores on TPA 1 and 2 are required before a student may begin student teaching.  TPA 3 and 4 are completed during student teaching and passing scores are required prior to graduation and earning a credential.

RICA - Reading Instruction Competence Assessment

Multiple Subject Credential Candidates Only

The purpose of the RICA is to ensure that California-trained candidates for Multiple Subject Teaching Credentials and Education Specialist Instruction Credentials (special education) possess the knowledge and skills important for the provision of effective reading instruction to students.

US Constitution

California Credential requirement

There are several ways to meet the US Constitution requirement.  You may complete a test or take specific coursework to meet this requirement.

CPR Certification

California Credential Requirement

The CPR certification must be based on a course that includes adult, child and infant CPR.  The course/certificate must follow American Red Cross and/or American Heart Association guidelines.

Administrative NES exam (TBD)

The state of California is currently changing testing requirements for administrators.  Additional information will be added once it becomes available.
