Service Learning Project

 Service Learning Project

During my internship in Block II at Blue Ridge Elementary School in the fall of 2007 I created a service learning project. The service learning project I did was Operation Christmas Child. The other interns in third grade also did Operation Christmas Child for their service learning project. This was neat because the whole third grade conducted the same service learning project. First I checked with the principal to make sure that he agreed this would be a good service learning project. I typed up a letter to the parent’s children in my class letting them know what we were doing. I asked the children to bring in items to go into the shoe boxes that we would make together as a class. I gave the children one week to bring in the item before we made the shoe boxes. The children really loved this. They were really excited about making the boxes for the children that were their age. The first day I told them about the Operation Christmas Child one of the children came up to me and gave me a dollar out of his pocket. When the children brought in all their items we put the shoe boxes together. Then we wrote letters to the children who would get the boxes that we had made for them. The kids loved this. They wanted to write and write more to them. All the children signed the letters that we put in each of the shoe boxes that we made. I then took them to the drop off station and sent them off. I feel like this was a great service learning project for the children in my classroom. I think that they had a really good time doing this. I had been teaching my intergraded unit that was on communities. I think this tied in well to help people in other communities. I have learned that the children love doing things like this to help other children out. I can tell that the class that I was in was a very caring group of students. This service learning project brought my class more together and helped form a community in the classroom.

Rationale

Rationale for Service Learning Project

Context: During my internship in Block II, I did a service learning project with my class at Elementary school. I had my students come together in the class as a community. The service learning project I did was to have the class put collected items together in shoe boxes for the Operation Christmas Child. I talked with the principal at the elementary school about this service learning project and told him that I would like to make shoe boxes with children for Operation Christmas Child. I sent a letter home to the parents including them on this service learning project and asking them and their child to bring in items that we could put together in a box for Operation Christmas Child. This service learning project went great. All the students really liked bringing in the items to put in our shoe boxes. Once all of the students had brought in their items they were going to bring we put the boxes together.  We made a class letter for each shoe box and put it inside the shoebox. Then I took the shoe boxes to the drop off station.

Impact: This impacted my students by teaching them about foreign counties where the shoe boxes would be going. The students learned about a since of community and helping other people out in times of need. This also impacted by student learning with writing. The students’ memories were refreshed on how to write a letter to someone. It was a great way to integrate language arts into my service learning project.

Alignment:

I met Standard 16, Indicator 7 by encouraging the students to participate in volunteer community activities.

I met Standard 16, Indicator 1 by involving the students in activities outside of school with Operation Christmas Child service learning project.

I met Standard 16, indicator 3 by sending a letter home to parents to let them know what I was doing with their children in the class and also to include them in the service learning project.

I met Standard 11, indicator 1 by incorporating communication into my service learning project with the parents and the principal.

I met Standard 11, indicator 2 by the service learning project by writing letters which integrates language arts.
