Context

In this project I was assigned to work with two other people. We researched African Americans. We researched statistical information on them; the information about population in US and <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">North Carolina</st1:place></st1:State>. We found information on education, poverty, and employment of African Americans. We found common stereotypes that are formed about African Americans and why they were misconceptions about that culture. We found classroom practices to use with African American students. Some of the classroom practices we found were from books that give suggestions to do, journal articles and websites. We found children’s book that dealt with African Americans. We gave a summary of each book and an activity that the teacher could do in the classroom. We also came up with fifteen African Americans that were not athletic and non Hollywood but are very accomplished people. We gave a bibliography for each person. So that the teacher will have a list of people that she can tell a child about that African American and how accomplished they are. Maybe the student will think of that person as they hero or remodel.  We have a resource bank in our project that has website that teachers can use for themselves and also to suggest to parents. We found agencies that facilitate the understanding of African American culture. These agencies can help families in many different ways. We researched African Americans in depth and have developed a collection of information, ideas to use in classroom, and resources to use with children and or their family that we as teachers can use.

 

Impact

When I have my own classroom and I am teaching I will look back at my cultural report and pull ideas to use in my classroom when I need help teaching or need resources for and African American student. I will use the classroom practices that were in our report in my classroom. If I have a African American family that need resources I will be able to use the resources bank in which we created in our report. I will pull children’s book from our report to use in my class. I will even use some to the children’s books to give the child a interest in reading. I will use the common misconceptions about African Americans to remind myself that they are misconceptions and not the truth.

 

Alignment

I have met DPI standard 14, indicator 2 and 5 by researching the common stereotypes and misconceptions and then researching to find out why there are not true, and supporting that they are misconceptions with data.

I have met DPI standard 14, indicator 6 by researching what are the best culturally classroom practices. We found things that teachers should practice in their classroom for the different culture groups.

I have met DPI standard1 14, indicator 1 by researching a resource bank that has many resources that me as a teacher can go to and tell the parents of the student originations and place that support their culture.
