The Lorax

"The Lorax" Rationale

Context:  This was a lesson plan that I developed in the Fall 2008 semester during my student teaching at Westwood Elementary School in West Jefferson, NC where I was under the care of Mrs. Paige Fairchild.  I developed this lesson to be a follow up to a science lesson I was teaching about organisms in the environment, ecosystems, and how everything in nature interacts by reading the story "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss.  This is a great story for any age because regardless of how advanced you are, the message is still the same.

Impact:  This is a lesson that I hope to one day use in my own classroom.  I feel that it will be very effective in helping students to find comprehension about difficult science topics.  I love to have a very modern approach to my lessons, and by reading a funny story that restates lessons that I have already taught, really helps me with this.

Alignment:

Standard 1 Indicator 5:  I have met this standard by understanding that reading is a process that helps students to learn through playing on the knowledge that they already have and the context of the reading situation.

Standard 3 Indicator 1:  I have met this standard by having knowledge of and teaching my students about the characteristics of living things, organisms and their environments, and the relationship between humans, organisms, and their habitats.
