The great teacher is not the man who supplies the most facts, but the one in whose presence we become different people.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Welcome to the Philosophy of Education section of my portfolio.

This section features an artifact that represents what I have learned that pertains to the development, learning, and motivation standard.

In completing this assignment, I thoroughly developed my beliefs in the following areas:

  • Development, learning, and motivation

  • Instruction

  • Assessment

  • Professionalism

Each area listed addresses the following ideas:

Development, learning, and motivation

  • Piaget’s Theory
  • Information Processing Theory
  • Sociocultural Theory
  • Children develop through interaction with people and objects.
  • Constructivist view of teaching
  • Students are intrinsically motivated to learn
  • Safe and welcoming classroom community

Instruction

  • Students are the focus of instruction
  • The Zone of Proximal Development
  • Over-lapping Waves Theory: students use a variety of approaches to solve problems
  • Differentiation
  • Incorrect Answers= Alternative Conceptions
  • Each student should be actively engaged
  • High amounts of communication

Assessment

  • Pre-assessments
  • Formative assessments
  • Authentic assessments
  • Performance-based assessments

Professionalism

  • Professional qualities
  • Collaboration with students, fellow teachers, administrators, and the community
  • Role model
  • Leader
  • Life-long student
  • Dedication

In developing my philosophy of teaching, I learned about the ways in which my beliefs align with what I identify to attribute to effective teaching and learning within a classroom setting. I have fully established my current values and ideals that are representative of a positive learning experience, which work to promote optimal academic, social, and emotional development in all students.
