Welcome to the Standard 2.4 Social Studies section of my portfolio.

This section includes artifacts that represent what I have learned that pertain to the ACEI Standard 2.4: Social Studies, which states that "candidates know, understand, and use the major concepts and modes of inquiry from the social studies—the integrated study of history, geography, the social sciences, and other related areas—to promote elementary students’ abilities to make informed decisions as citizens of a culturally diverse democratic society and interdependent world."

Domain: CURRICULUM
Standard: 2.4 Social studies—Candidates know, understand, and use the major concepts and modes of inquiry from the social studies—the integrated study of history, geography, the social sciences, and other related areas—to promote elementary students’ abilities to make informed decisions as citizens of a culturally diverse democratic society and interdependent world;

An artifact that I have completed that is representative of meeting the ACEI standard is my “permeable families” presentation. The presentation is part of a unit that teaches about diversity in students. The presentation focuses on the permeable family, which is comprised of a variety of features that prevent children from getting essential care and nurturing. The information gather for the presentation was taken from Chapter 7 of the text entitled, Classroom Management: Perspectives on the Social Curriculum.

The presentation highlights the following aspects:

  • Main points of the reading about permeable families
  • What to do and what not to do when teaching students from permeable families
  • A children’s book that corresponds with permeable families
  • Student activity to facilitate students’ knowledge about permeable families
  • A summary of the information including what was learned about permeable families, as well as beliefs about anti-bias teaching
  • Questions to probe student thinking about permeable families

In completing this artifact, I have learned that students affected by being a part of a permeable family are prevented from receiving essential care and nurturing. In addition, common patterns of such families exist in both single-parent, and two-parent households. Since the stress of family issues at home can hinder a child’s learning experience, it is my role as a teacher to fulfill the obligation of searching for positive ways to help them grow and learn.

My learning applies to the standard in the following way:

  • Candidates know, understand, and use the major concepts and modes of inquiry from the social studies—the integrated study of the social sciences—to promote elementary students’ abilities to make informed decisions as citizens of a culturally diverse democratic society and interdependent world
