| 5a. Strong, visible partnerships with measurable results are established and maintained with business, industry, and community collaborators. The Covance emails illustrate a fairly typical exchange during the cementing of a new partnership. Covance came to our Career Expo and our students were able to ask them questions to find out what Covance does and what they look for in an employee. The teachers were invited to tour the Covance research facility and future student field trips were planned.
The Equine Medical Center is a world-renown medical facility for horses which is reflected in the international staff. There are few large animal professionals in the immediate area for our students. We have built a relationship with the hospital over the years by participating in a volunteer, on-call, commitment called Foal Watch. Our students get valuable experience working with hospital staff and have proven their reliability and dedication. The emails illustrate that the hospital values our partnership by creating an internship opportunity specifically so our students could participate.
Almost every year the National Park Service (NPS) celebrates President Teddy Roosevelt's birthday at Teddy Roosevelt Island. President Roosevelt was a conservationist and the NPS offers many animal-related and environmental career paths so this is a great partnership for our program. We take animals that are representative of wild species (ie. domestic rabbits for wild rabbits) to the event. This event gives our students a chance to hear from and to work with Park Rangers in a professional setting. It gives our students valuable experience in public speaking and takes them outside of the classroom environment. The NPS also comes to speak to our FFA club about career opportunities.
Julie Palais is one of our Delta Society partners. She and other members of this organization have come to speak to our classes. In addition, usually around Veteran's Day, Julie and her dog Bailey have invited 1 or 2 students to accompany them on a visit. This takes a fair amount of additional work for Julie as she needs to get the permission of the medical facility and follow their requirements for adding a student to the visit. Attached is an email used to create an article for NewsCheck, the Arlington Public School employee newsletter.
