The teachers in the Animal Science program are well versed in evaluating education. Reflection is one of the hallmarks of the National Board process. As lessons are completed, the teachers reflect on what went well and what could be improved. Teachers also review units as a whole and various assessments given. If Improvements are needed, they are either made immediately if applicable or noted for next year. Collaborative reflection is used extensively during the American Red Cross Pet First Aid and CPR unit. Since both classes receive this certification, the classes are team taught. After each class the teachers get together to review the lesson, make sure that all content was given and discuss changes to be made either in the next class or next year.
The entire animal science staff makes a concerted effort to stay on top of trends in the animal science field. Jenny, the lab technician, spends many hours of her own time reviewing new techniques for housing our animals as well as for advancements in nutrition. The teachers take advantage of professional development opportunities in the school and in the county. They also communicate with their many partners to get outside opinions on the curriculum and the field in general. Feedback is discussed and implementation strategies are designed. This process is repeated at every advisory and partnership meeting.
