During EDUC 499 and my student teaching placements I was required to complete task 3 of the edtpa. Through this I was required to give my students an assessment during my learning segment and be able to respond with feedback and take data collected from the assessment to determine my next steps of teaching for the students. The assessment I chose was an exit ticket that students were to work on at the end of the lesson and turn back into me. This more informal assessment allowed me to monitor learner progress because the students completed the exit ticket right after the lesson so it showed how well the students initially understood the lesson. This shows my decision making because I was required to look at my data chart and see what I wanted my next steps to be with the students.
For my first placement of Student Teaching in Bradford, PA my teacher asked me to plan out an entire unit that I would be teaching throughout my placement. The Unit that I planned was Chapter 5, Polynomials for the Algebra 2 classroom. For this I had to read the textbook that is used at Bradford and look at all of the key topics of polynomials to then break the chapter into lessons and plan how long each learning segment would take to complete in the classroom. Along with teaching the lessons I was asked to plan a variety of assessments like quizzes, tests, and projects. I was tasked with making up the quizzes and test to assess the students, and gave them a common core real life project to further their learning. The project was to be completed right after the test but many student turned the project in early so I was able to monitor their learning progress right before the test. I had two quizzes that helped me to also monitor where the students were and possible what material I may have wanted to cover again. These quizzes helped me and the students decision making by seeing what the students didn't know and how I could help them review for the test. The test gave me a final progress check and most student did well on the test. I have attached one of the quizzes that the students were given.
During my Field Block placement in Jamestown, my cooperating teacher worked a lot with warm up questions to start the class and get the students minds ready for the lesson. I thought that this idea helped us to know how well the students understood the lesson before and how we should approach the next lesson. Since I thought these assessments were helpful I incorporated them into my first student teaching placement in Bradford. I did these warm up assessments later in my unit so that I was able to review topics and see how well the students remembered and understood the topics learned earlier in the unit. These allowed me to monitor students understanding and progress and see if I needed to review or re teach any topics. I would also sometimes grade and give feedback on warm ups individually instead of as a class so students could see how they were doing in my eyes and how they stood with me to determine if they need help with topics and homework moving forward. I have attached one warm assignment to show a typical warm up assessment.
