The Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education: Social Studies Concentration consists of a 120 semester-hour curriculum that includes general education courses required by the University and coursework in education required for teacher certification. The program is nationally recognized by the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), "[serving] as an umbrella organization for elementary, secondary, and college teachers of history, civics, geography, economics, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and law-related education".

The state of Louisiana requires the passing of a content knowledge test (e.g., Praxis II Content Test) as a condition of teacher certification. The undergraduate teacher education program at Louisiana Tech University requires the passing of this test prior to admission into the teacher candidate's final clinical practice (e.g., student teaching). The post baccalaureate programs (certfication-only and M.A.T.) require passing scores for program admission.
