Multi-Text

Context:

The multi-text study assignment was created for RE 4030 under the advisement of Dr. Linda Pacifica in the Fall of 2008. This study focused on the fiction novel Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli and the informational, nonfiction book We Remember the Holocaust by David Adler. This unit concentrated on victims lives during and after the Holocaust.

Impact:

This multi-text study is a great way to explore and accept diversity.  It also serves as good history resource. The students will also learn new vocabulary and concepts specific to the Holocaust. This is a unit that can be taught in grade 6 and meets many of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Language Arts as well as Social Studies.

Alignment:

Standard 1:

Indicators 3, 4, and 6: This indicator was met by including historical literature into the study of the holocaust. I have included a variety of optional text to be read that would be suitable for children. This indicator was met by including activities that are designed to develop student's communication processes. The activities include journal writings, discussion questions, and critical thinking activities. This indicator was met by compiling a list of supplementary resources for children to read. These resources will help them compile background knowledge of the topics of the holocaust as discussed in this unit.

Standard 4:

Indicators 2 and 8: This indicator was met with the use of various forms of literature to teach the holocaust. This indicator was met by designing a unit to teach the events of the holocaust.

Standard 7:

Indicator 3: This indicator was met by assessing students prior knowledge on the holocaust using several before reading activities.

Standard 8:

Indicators 2, 3, and 4: This indicator was met by having many discussion question activities and journal activities to monitor comprehension. This indicator was met by requiring children to think critically to answer discussion questions and to complete vocabulary and journal activities. This indicator was met because this unit encourages students enjoyment of reading by allowing them to choose from a large selection of books on the holocaust topic.

Standard 11:

Indicator 1: This indicator was met through the various journal activities and class discussion questions.

Indicator 2: This indicator was met through class discussion of the horrors those in the novel were exposed to.

Indicator 4: This indicator was met through contrasting the mass numbers of individuals killed with numerical equals.

Indicator 5: This indicator was met through the historical Holocaust flip chart with facts and statistics from that time period.

Standard 12:

This standard was met by incorporating an art project into the unit. Students were required to collect photos of holocaust victims and participated in making a memorial to honor them.
