Context:
This artifact was created in Block 2 during the Fall semester of 2007. It was created under the advisement of Mr. Jeff Goodman in GS 4401: Science and Science Teaching in the Elementary School. This center was created for second grade and emphasizes the communicate process skill.
Impact:
This center helps students to meet the following North Carolina Standard Course of Study objectives for second grade:
3.05 Investigate and observe how mixtures can be made by combining solids, liquids or gases and how they can be separated again.
3.06 Observe that a new material is made by combining two or more materials with properties different from the original material.
Students are also learning the basics of using process skills and ways to effectively communicate their findings.
Alignment:
Completing this assignment helps me meet the following NCDPI standards:
Standard 10: Through this center I provided students an opportunity for active inquiry and experimentation. I am helping students to learn the communication, observation, and prediction process skills by giving them a specified experiment and guiding questions. Also, the experiment is hands on which allows the students to have an authentic experience with science as opposed to reading about mixtures from a text book.
