UNIV 290: Seminar in Community-based Service & Leadership

Engage

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.
Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

(Margaret Mead, Anthropologist, 1901-1978)

UNIV 290 is a seminar course exploring the theory and praxis of community engagement, active citizenship, and leadership through service-learning.  Students' reflections on these topics are enhanced by 40-50 hours of direct engagement with a non-profit organization or community-based project of their choosing.  That practical experience becomes the focus of much of students' learning throughout the semester, as they apply academic concepts studied in the seminar to their organization.  The products of their reflection, including blogs and a synthetic community-based research eportfolio, are intentionally maintained as PUBLIC documents so that other members of the Loyola community can learn from and be inspired by 290 students' efforts each semester.

Instructor:  UNIV 290 is taught by Chris Skrable, Service-Learning Program Manager with Loyola's Center for Experiential Learning.
