UNIV 290 students each volunteer 40 or more hours of their time at a non-profit organization of their choosing during the semester they're enrolled in the class.  This organization becomes the focus of much of their reflection throughout the semester, as they continually apply new concepts (and new questions) to their experiences there.  Students publish blogs throughout the semester to keep the instructor and their classmates up-to-date on their on-site experiences, and synthesize their reflections into a final electronic portfolio.
