My "Student Teaching" video:
This is a lesson on the US Civil War. My host teacher, Mrs. Dickerson, and I agreed to use as many opportunities as we could to help close "skill gaps" that many students have. In this lesson we utilized a graphic organizer that used cannons to denote battles, a timeline sheet to organize events, and the animated geography maps from the online textbook. I modeled the timeline note taking for the students and led them through the appropriate placement of the battle name on the "cannon" sheet. This combined approached met the needs of all the learners and especially those with differentiated learning needs. The integration of the animated maps from the textbook, animated maps from "civilwar.org", and The History Channel multimedia from the Holtonline had a major impact on student learning. The timeline note taking provided a good way to connect "time and sequence" comprehension. The graphic organizer "cannons" were a visual and note taking tool designed to help students keep their notes condensed to only the relevant data. The multimedia camera was connected to the Holtonline textbook with the animated geography battlefield maps in que and also connected to "civilwar.org" which had the Battle of Antietam in que. By integrating the animated maps and note taking prompts (timeline and cannons), I was able to check on student progress and scaffold those that needed extra help. The check for understanding questions at the beginning and end of class allowed for students to quickly access the information using their timelines or cannon sheets. These prompts also made it very easy for absent students to get missed notes.
