This paper explores the law and its application to issues in my school district. I schedule an appointment with my superintendent to learn about an issue the district is dealing with that is not yet covered by law. This paper demonstrates mastery of the Arizona Professional Administrative Standard 1, which states the administrator facilitates the development, articulation, implementation, and management of an organization's mission. In this paper, the indicators explored under this Standard are:
Standard 2: The administrator facilitates the success of all students by understanding, responding to, and influencing the social, cultural, and legal aspects of the community. The paper demonstrates the extent to which the administrator adjusts local policy to state and federal requirements; develops procedures to recognize potential civil and criminal liabilities; develops procedures to provide for equal educational opportunities in educational programs; and works effectively with policy makers.
Standard 4: The administrator effectively manages services, programs, operations, and resources. The paper demonstrates the extent to which the administrator identifies the potential legal issues affecting a school.
This paper also shows mastery of the ISLLC Standard 6 which states a school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by understanding, responding to, and influencing the larger political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context. In this regard, the paper demonstrates the following three detailed areas of knowledge, beliefs, and performance:
The administrator has knowledge and understanding of principles of representative governance that undergird the system of American schools; the role of public education in developing and renewing a democratic society and an economically productive nation; the law as related to education and schooling; global issues and forces affecting teaching and learning; an the dynamics of policy development and advocacy under our democratic political system.
The administrator believes in, values, and is committed to education as a key to opportunity and social mobility;recognizing a variety of ideas, values, and cultures; the importance of a continuing dialogue with other decision makers affecting education; actively participating in the political and policy-making context in the service of education; and using legal systems to protect student rights and improve student opportunities.
The administrator facilitates processes and engages in activities ensuring that the environment in which schools operate is influenced on behalf of students and their families;communication occurs among the school community concerning trends, issues, and potential changes in the environment in which schools operate;there is ongoing dialogue with representatives of diverse community groups; and the school community works within the framework of policies, laws, and regulations enacted by local, state, and federal authorities.
This assignment reports on current liability issues at Meyer Elementary School and how the school staff works together to pre-empt these liability issues.
Arizona Professional Administrative Standard 2 by is met by responding to the legal aspects of the community. Performance Indicator 3 is met by showing how the school adjusts local policy to state and federal requirements. Performance Indicator 4 is met with this assignment's criteria to develop procedures to recognize potential civil liabilities. Performance Indicator 5 is met by ecxplaining how a teacher may have a procedure in place to provide for equal educational opportunities in educational programs. Performance Indicator 6 is also met because of the importance of understanding and appreciating the diversity in the community.
Arizona Professional Administrative Standard 3 is met by a discussion of the school survey, which implements positive and proactive communication strategies for effective parent and community involvement to improve the learning environment for all students. Specifically, Performance Indicator 2, which discusses the need to request and respond to community feedback.
ISLLC Standard 3 is met through discussing the success of all students by ensuring management of the organization, operations, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment. ISLLC Standard 6 is met by promoting the success of all students by understanding, responding to, and influencing the larger political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context.
This assignment gave me the opportunity to research teacher's rights, and how they have changed historically. The paper discusses court cases which protect individual teacher's rights to freedom of speech and expression.
Arizona Professional Administrative Standard 1 with Performance Indicator 4 is demonstrated in this assignment through assessment of an organization's mission and understanding how educational issues affect the school community. Standard 2 with Performance Indicators 1 and 6 are met through understanding mutual expectations between administration and teachers, as well as understanding the cultural and legal aspects of the community and appreciating diversity in that same community.
ISLLC Standard 1 is met by discussing the barriers that might inhibit achieving the vision of the school. ISLLC Standard 6 is met through examination of the law as related to education and schooling, the importance of equity, and working within the framework of policies, laws, and regulations enacted by authorities. ISLLC Standard 6 is also represented by my understanding of principles of representative governance that undergird the system of American schools, the role of public education in developing and renewing a democratic society, the law as related to education and schooling, the political, social, cultural and economic systems and processes that impact schools, models and strategies of change and conflict resolution as applied to the larger political, social, cultural and economic contexts of schooling, the dynamics of policy development and advocacy under our democratic political system, and the importance of diversity and equity in a democratic society.
