TPE 5- Student Engagement

Science is a topic that allows for students to be engaged in hands-on learning, experimentation, discourse, and problem-solving.  I encourage students to question the world around them and use inquiry-based learning to derive answers to their own questions.

In this lesson, students learned about ecosystem structure and function by creating and building their own ecosystems.  Students hypothesized about the factors that would influence their ecosystem and its viability.  This lesson was exemplary in motivating students for engagement in the class.  Students participated in authentic scientific design, hypothesizing, data collecting, and deriving a conclusion over a one-month period of time.  I am including the lesson hand-out, student observations, and an example of a final report.

In this problem-based learning lesson, students create an ecosystem with the goal to survive for a month. Students are engaged in learning by designing their own ecosystem and monitoring it for the duration of the study.
