Many Americans are affected by the rising epidemic of obesity. This assignment is designed to educate students about eating a proper diet to avoid obesity and the health effects associated with it. The project will consist of a study of nutrition and proper diet, risks associated with poor eating habits, and ways to prevent obesity and other nutrition related illnesses. Students will examine the differences between home cooked meals and fast food, and will develop an understanding of what foods are considered "smart foods" and what are considered junk.

More Than Half of All Americans are Too Fat: This article discusses why obesity is a problem in America.  There are statistics on how many Americans are affected by obesity and how obesity has increased throughout the years.  Also, there are guidelines that describe how a person is determined to be overweight along with strategies to prevent obesity.

You Are What You Eat:  The saying is old but the message is true.  This article discusses how different types of foods affect the body.  Information on healthy eating, maintaining a healthy weight, and foods to avoid can be found here.

Ate Too Much? Tight Pants May Be the Smallest Worry: This article discusses the risks associated with overeating, especially on holidays.  There are neat facts like how many cups of food the stomach can hold, and how many hours it typically takes a meal to digest.  There are also great tips to avoid overeating on the holidays.

Fat and Calorie Content of Fast Food and a Home-Cooked Meal: This website has statistics on the amount of calories and fat in home cooked meals vs. fast food meals.  You just might think twice about heading to McDonald's.

Smart Food, Junk Food: So that's why I can't eat candy for dinner.  This article describes what smart foods are and why they are good for you.  Likewise, the article describes what junk foods are and what makes them so bad for us.
