As a search and rescue volunteer, you may not always have safety first on your mind. Usually you are so pumped up with adrenaline and wanting to get to your assignment that safety is not your first thought. A disaster area by nature has inherent risks and hazards. It is imperative that you get into the mindset that safety must be your first responsibility.

Health concerns. You cannot help anyone if you are fatigued, dehydrated or are suffering hypothermia or have an allergic reaction.
