Teacher Assistant(s) Performance Concerns Procedures

When a Teacher Assistant(s) is not performing up to expectations, the following steps will be taken:

I.

The mentor teacher and the teacher assistant(s) meet to discuss the problem and make a list of the improvements expected over the next several days. The supervisor may be invited to the meeting but, at a minimum, must receive a copy of the listed expected behaviors. This communication may be through email.

II.

If the problem persists after the probationary period outlined in the list of improvements, the mentor teacher, supervisor, and teacher assistant(s) will meet to review the expectations and to clarify all questions. A formal contract delineating behavior goals is written and signed by the teacher assistant(s), supervisor, and mentor teacher. The contract language, length of term, and timeline for improvement will depend on the circumstances and the severity of the problem. (Due to the short period of time in the field experience, it is critical for the mentor teacher to email or call the supervisor as soon as possible to set up this meeting.)

III.

If there is no improvement and/or the written stipulations in the contract are not followed, the supervisor and mentor teacher will collaboratively write a letter informing the intern she/he is not meeting expectations and will not pass ELED 307 Teacher Assistantship field work. Note: At this time or the candidate(s) will be removed from the assistantship and further action will be determined by university personnel. Under special circumstances, a second contract may be written.
