A. Making Subject Matter Comprehensible To Students (CSTP 3)

Language Arts

books.jpg In this section, I have included a lesson that includes using the DRTA strategy. By the end of end of the lesson, the students will be able to make predictions, read and construct a summary within stopping points (sections), and heck predictions against the summary from the text and make new predictions for the next section before reading that part. Included is also a lesson that was the intro to a unit in their Open Court books. This unit is titled "Oral History." This lesson allowed me to share with my students a bit of my family's oral history through artifacts and portraits. The kids loved it and so did I!

Science-Oceans

In this activity the students learn the differences between salt water and fresh water. They will also learn about ocean currents and will use the colored cubes to see how cold and warm water mix and how this mixing causes currents. They will also learn how fresh water floats on top of fresh water. This will give students an understanding of the difference between water in the ocean and fresh water throughout the planet. Standards included are as follows:

2.2 Write descriptions that use concrete sensory details to present and support unified impressions of people, places, things, or experiences.
2.7 Follow simple multiple-step written instructions (e.g., how to assemble a product or play a board game).
1.5 Organize ideas chronologically or around major points of information.
b. Students know examples of diverse life forms in different environments, such as oceans, deserts, tundra, forests, grasslands, and wetlands.
d. Predict the outcome of a simple investigation and compare the result with the prediction.

History Lessons

NVTech_vc011031.jpg This section includes lessons on the Seven Continents and the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (Kansas) case. These two lessons have been designed for younger students so that they may understand such big concepts. These lessons also include a cross between other standards that include Langauge Arts. This shows my competence to be able to teach different standards in one lesson.

Math Lessons

In this section, I have included two lesson that include NCTM standards and California Content Standards. In these lessons, the students use hands on activities. In the first lesson, students calculate distances, read charts and maps. In the second lesson, students use art as a means to understand fractions and symmetry. This allows for students to engage themselves in math lessons that are both instructional and fun. It touches upon the different modalities of learning.
