4 - Making Content Accessible

Summary

English Language Learners will benefit from this lesson due to its presentation of how to read in English and follow a story line. Students are then expected to write their own "dialog bubbles". Students, especially English language learners, will have a greater understanding of words, phonics, and how they need to decode each to make sentences. Students will also be able to see how a species of seahorse live in their coral reef habitat.

Differentiated Instruction Strategies for lesson:

For slower performers of word study:

-When students are asked to come up and read the dialog aloud they will be coached and encouraged to completely read the sentence. Less emphasis will be placed on volume, and speed of reading aloud, while more emphasis lies on phonetic reading and comprehension.

- Positive reinforcement for attempting to engage in English.

- The dialog could be written at any skill level, so long as it could possibly be associated with any given scene. "I can swim" (dialog of a fish) would be appropriate.

- students are made aware that they should ask their table mates for help with whatever they need. If that is not enough, the teacher will sit with the student and prompt them to complete their activity using thought provoking questions such as "What do you think this yellow fish would say?" or "What could this baby seahorse say?".

For advanced students:-They could write more complex sentences or just a higher number of sentences/dialog bubbles.

Reflection

Students were given two ways of expressing their understanding of the concept. One was to place pre-made dialog bubbles where they think would be most appropriate place. The other was to make up their own sentences which some sea creature might say. There was a lot of modeling and examples given to scaffold the students learning. I was also consistently checking for student's understanding. I assisted those students who I determined needed more individualized guidance to properly carry out the assignment. This was a very successful lesson.
